Because most people are visual creatures and are exposed to different images everyday. It is both advantageous for media content creators and the viewers.

I don't think it's good for people to just buy whatever they want, whenever they want. If that belief continues to prevail then all of us would be poor eventually. "The more the better" can't be applied to things that would just eat up our time and money and is just for our temporary use.
